How the U.S. uses AI, by state
51 states · Anthropic Economic Index
The Anthropic Economic Index reports Claude.ai (Free and Pro) activity by U.S. state. This page renders that directly: each state's share of national usage, the average autonomy of its AI conversations, and its augmentation-vs-automation mix.
"Share of US usage" is a state's portion of national activity — it tracks population, not a per-person adoption rate. Figures are shares of observed conversations, not of jobs or work time, and reflect one assistant's consumer sample.
Most augmentation-leaning: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Washington. Most automation-leaning: Wyoming, New York, South Dakota, West Virginia, Mississippi.
AI task-exposure by state
A different question from adoption: given the jobs that actually exist in each state, how much does that work overlap with what AI can do? This index weights every state's occupation mix (BLS OEWS May 2024 state × occupation employment) by each occupation's position on Singulariki's composite AI Exposure Index.
Every state sits in a narrow national band (the index runs 46–65; national 52), because every state needs nurses, drivers, cooks and clerks. The shading is each state's relative rank; the number is its index. Higher means the local job mix leans toward knowledge work that shares more tasks with AI — overlap, not a forecast of jobs lost. Most exposed: District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Colorado. Least: Wyoming, North Dakota, Mississippi, Nevada, Louisiana.
