Job outlook
963 occupations · BLS Employment Projections 2024-2034
Every two years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes Employment Projections — its model of how many people will hold each occupation ten years out, given expected demand, retirements, and how the economy is changing. These are the official numbers behind every "fastest-growing jobs" headline. Across these 963 occupations, BLS projects total employment to move from 220,838,200 in 2024 to 228,321,900 by 2034 — a net change of +3.4% (7,483,700 jobs) and roughly 22,759,700 openings every year as workers are hired, replaced, and move on.

Still hiring most — despite high AI exposure
A high AI task-overlap score doesn't mean a job is vanishing. Annual openings count every hire — growth and replacement as people retire or move on. These are the most-exposed occupations (top quartile of AI task overlap) that nonetheless post the largest yearly hiring. Together, top-quartile-exposed work accounts for 23% of all annual U.S. openings.
Exposure = share of an occupation's tasks that overlap with what today's AI models can do (Eloundou GPT-overlap + Felten AIOE), not a measure of jobs lost. Openings are BLS 2024→2034 projections of growth plus replacement demand.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment Projections 2024-2034; median wage and employment from BLS OEWS (national, May 2024). These are BLS's projections of labor-market demand — they model the size of the workforce, not how AI will change any single job. A declining projection means BLS expects fewer of these jobs to exist, for reasons that include automation but also offshoring, demand shifts, and demographics; it is not a measure of AI exposure. Employment figures are headcounts in thousands. "Openings per year" is the average annual sum of growth and replacement needs over the projection decade.
