What people actually ask AI to do
24 broad themes · 618 specific requests
The Anthropic Economic Index groups a sample of Claude.ai (Free and Pro) conversations by the user's request. This page renders that taxonomy directly: 24 broad themes and 618 specific requests, each with its share of observed activity and — where the sample is large enough — the U.S. states where it over-indexes.
These are shares of observed AI conversations, not of work, jobs, or revenue, and reflect one assistant's consumer sample. The broad and specific lists are two independent clusterings of the same conversations, not a hierarchy. Each resolution includes one unclassified residual cluster (counted above, kept out of the browse lists below), so the totals match the “of 24/618” ranks on each request page.
Concentration: the top 10 specific requests cover ≈4% of all classified requests; the top 50 ≈14%; the top 100 ≈26%.
Broad themes
Most common specific requests
The individual requests that make up the largest share of activity.
Most geographically distinctive requests
Requests that over-index most strongly in a single U.S. state versus the national average (states below the sample floor are excluded). The ratio compares the state's local share to the national share.
